It’s a dress! It’s a backpack! It’s an apron! No, it’s a chicken diaper.

For a chicken parent, it’s a method of waste management. For chickens, part of a mildly annoying, daily changing routine and a bold fashion statement.

Chicken diapers are an essential part of indoor chicken keeping — if you intend for them to roam freely, and don’t wish to have your floor scattered with a chocolate truffle topping. They’re made from a soft cloth with a waterproof liner and come in a variety of patterns, colors, and styles. Diapers range from $15-$30 depending on the supplier, size, fabric, and other variables.

Most pet chickens live in the backyard. During the day, they hang out in an enclosed space called a “run” and sleep in a shed called a “coop.”

Chickens can also live in the house full-time, just like our cats and dogs! Others might be kept inside temporarily while they are recovering from an illness, rehabbing an injury, or as a reprieve from bullying by the rest of the flock.

Chickens have a rapid rate of digestion and thus, are little poop factories. They poop all day, everyday and generally can’t be potty-trained. Indoor chickens can be caged to contain their waste but, diapers allow them to roam the house mess-free.
